उहिलेको काठमाडौँ  शहर, ट्रलिबस चल्थ्यो सरर ...

नेपालमा आज भन्दा ५० वर्ष पहिले नै ट्रलिबस चल्थ्यो । चिनियाँ सरकारको सहयोगमा  नेपालमा २०३२ साल पुस १४ देखि ट्रली बस सञ्चालनमा आएको थियो । सञ्चालनमा आएपछि  शुरुको तीन वर्षसम्म ट्रलिबसलाई चीनकै प्राविधिकले हेर्ने गरेका थिए भने व्यवस्थापनको जिम्मा तत्कालीन सरकारले नेपाल यातायात संस्थानलाई दिएको थियो । ट्रलिबसको भौतिक पुर्वाधार निर्माण खर्च त्यो बेला लगभग ४ करोड पुगेको थियो ।

त्यतिबेला काठमाडौको त्रिपुरेश्वरदेखि  मध्यपुर थिमि हुँदै भक्तपुरको सुर्यविनायकसम्म जम्मा १३ किलोमिटर सडकमा २२ वटा ट्रलिबसहरु सञ्चालनमा आएका थिए ।  त्यो बेला ट्रलिबस चल्ने रुट यसप्रकार थियो  - 

त्रिपुरेश्वर - थापाथली - माइतीघर - बानेश्वर  - तीनकुने  - कोटेश्वर - लोकन्थली - कौशलटार  - गट्ठाघर  - ठिमी - सल्लाघारी  - सूर्यविनायक भक्तपुर

ट्रलिबसको विद्युत सब स्टेशन बानेश्वर र ठिमीमा गरी दुई स्थानमा रहेको थियो । त्यसै गरेर  यसको टर्मिनल स्टेशनहरु त्रिपुरेश्वर र सूर्यविनायकमा रहेको थियो । ट्रलिबसको लागि ११ केभी (एसी) को विद्युत शक्तिको आवश्यकता पर्छ तर यो  डिसी ६०० भोल्टबाट चल्छ ।

२०५३ सालमा दाताको सहयोगमा थप १० वटा ट्रलिबसहरु थपिए पछि ट्रलिबसको संख्या जम्मा ३२ पुग्यो ।   ट्रलिबसहरु थपिएको भए पनि एक दशक पहिले सेवा बन्द हुँदा नौ वटा मात्र चालू अवस्थामा थिए ।  ट्रलिबस सेवा आर्थिक, राजनीतिक र अन्य  कारण  २०५८ पुष ४ गते देखि २०६० भदौ १५ गते सम्म करीब २ वर्षका लागि स्थगन  गरियो ।

पछि पुनः २०६० भदौ  १६ गतेबाट सेवा सुरू गरेको ट्रलिबसको रुट  त्रिपुरेश्वर देखि  कोटेश्वरसम्म जम्मा ५ किलो मिटरमा मात्र सीमित गरियो । ट्रलिबस २०६३ सालमा कोटेश्वरसम्म चल्ने गरेको भए पनि २०६५ सालमा यो बन्द हुनु भन्दा अगाडि मीनभवनसम्म मात्रै चल्ने गरेको थियो । तीन दशकसम्म  सेवा दिएको उक्त ट्रली बसको  संचालन २०६५ मङ्सिर देखि पूर्णरूपमा बन्द भयो । भने यसको १ वर्ष पछि यो संग सम्बन्धित ट्रलीबस सेवा को कार्यालय पनि पूर्ण रुपमा बन्द गरियो ।

यसरी नेपालमा २०३२-२०६५ सम्म जम्मा ३३ वर्ष ट्रलिबस चल्यो जसमध्ये बीचमा २ वर्ष स्थगन भएको घटाउँदा  वास्तविक अवधि ३१ वर्ष मात्र हुन आउन्छ ।

ट्रलिबस संचालनको लागि सडकमा खम्बा गाडेर ओभर हेड तार जडान गर्नु मात्र झन्झटिलो पक्ष छ ।  नत्र,नेपालको सन्दर्भमा ब्याट्री बाट चल्ने इलेक्ट्रिक गाडी भन्दा नेपालमै उत्पादन हुने बिजुली बाट चल्ने ट्रलिबस धेरै किफायती,सस्तो र भरपर्दो छ   । निजी यातायातको लागि ब्याट्री बाट चल्ने गाडि नै उपयुक्त भएपनि सार्वजनिक यातायातको लागि स्वदेश मै उत्पादित बिजुली बाट चल्ने ट्रलिबस नै उपयुक्त छ ।

Trolleybuses used to run in Nepal 50 years before. With the help of the Chinese government, the trolley bus started operating in Nepal from December 28, 1975. For the first three years after it came into operation, the trolleybus was looked after by Chinese technicians, while the management was given to the Nepal Transport corporation (NTC). The physical infrastructure construction cost of the trolleybus reached about Rs. 40 million at that time.

At that time, 22 trolleybuses were operating on a total of 13 kilometers of road from Tripureshwar in Kathmandu to Suryavinayak in Bhaktapur via Madhyapur Thimi.

At that time the trolley bus route was as follows -

Tripureshwar - Thapathali - Maitighar - Baneshwar - Tinkune - Koteshwar - Lokanthali - Kaushaltar - Gatthaghar - Thimi - Sallaghari - Suryabinayak Bhaktapur.

  The electric sub-station of the trolleybus was located at two places in Baneshwar and Thimi. And its terminal stations were at Tripureshwar and Suryavinayak. The trolleybus requires an electric power of 11 kV (AC) but it runs on DC 600 volts.

After 10 more trolleybuses were added with the help of donors in 1997, the total number of trolleybuses reached 32. Although trolleybuses have been added, only 9 were operational when the service ceased a decade ago. Trolleybus service was suspended for about 2 years from 19 December 2001 to 1 September 2003 due to economic, political and other reasons.

  Later, the trolleybus route which started service again from 2 September 2003 was limited to only 5 km from Tripureshwar to Koteshwar. Although the trolleybus used to run till Koteshwar in 2063, before it was closed in 2065, it used to run only till Meen Bhavan. The operation of the trolley bus, which served for three decades, was completely stopped from November 2008. After 1 year, the related trolleybus service office was also completely closed in November 2009.

In this way, trolleybuses ran for a total of 33 years in Nepal from 1975-2008, out of which the actual duration comes to only 31 years after deducting the 2-year suspension.

The trolley buses are now in poor condition in the Transport Management Department premises at Meen Bhavan.

The only complicated aspect is to bury poles in the road and connect overhead wires for trolleybus operation. Otherwise, in the context of Nepal, the electric trolleybus is more affordable, cheap and reliable than the battery-operated electric vehicle. For private transportation, battery-powered vehicles are suitable, but for public transportation, trolleybuses powered by electricity produced in the country are suitable.
